Once, I went to a knockout steakhouse in Dallas for a special occasion. The food was as exceptional as the service; each course was accompanied by a special flight of wine/liquor to pair with the food.
At the end of the meal, the waitress rolled out a shiny metal cart, filled with mouth-watering desserts that tempted my eyes as much as my stomach.
On each tier, I noticed that the price went up – as well as the extravagance of the desserts. Perched politely at the very top sat a shiny silver dome. I assumed this would be the ‘grand finale’ of the delicacies.
“What’s that one?” I asked the waitress.
She took a deep breath.
“This…is our chefs surprise. Our most popular dessert.”
“What is it?”
“I can’t tell you that before I show it to you. Also, once you see it, you have to pay for it since it’s extremely rare.”
Being a bit of a gambler, I went for it.
The lights went off and every eye in the room now sat glued to the illuminated silver dish…
She unveiled the most magnificent dessert I’d seen in my life; it didn’t just look good – it looked better than life.
Grabbing my fork, I reached in and took a huge bite of the dish. Than another. My mind seemed to disconnect from reality with each bite.
Stabbing into it, I went for another bite. This time, my fork was greeted with something hard in the middle of the dish. As I pulled my fork out, the hard object followed.
Out of the cake, I extracted a bat head – which seemed to stare right at me.
I was horrified.
I coudln’t help but notice the wrinkly dead hairs sticking between the prongs of my fork.
It made me sick. Right there, in the middle of one of the most beautiful (and costly) places in Dallas.
The waitress was also horrified, but insisted she’d make it right.
Instead, she returned with another piece of the same dessert.
“Don’t worry, I cut around the bat this time.” she said.
The end.
