Knowing God

hands painting

I recently completed a discussion of the book Knowledge of the Holy, by A.W. Tozer, with the men in my Bible study. The book is nothing short of a masterpiece, in that it creates a beautiful frame for discsussion of a concept that’s largely unknown; God.

The Creator, Spirit, Higher Power, Universe – there are many different names human beings give to the things they can’t explain. We call the squishy thing between our ears ‘the brain’ and leave most wonderment or curiousity to the people in white coats about what’s happening in our own mind.

This afternoon, I spoke with a friend of mine about different stances of faith and religious practice.

They stated:

“I don’t think it’s possible to just throw everything at faith and expect that things will turn out well.”

I gave their statement some thought and then decided to share a personal revelation I had, only a night prior while I was walking through a dark room.

“If you’re blindfolded and told to navigate a house, eventually you’ll figure it out – largely through trial and error. If somebody guides you through the home, you get a different experience…

…rather than see with your eyes, you gain direction from a place of knowing, trusting and clear communication without sight.”

The same thing can be likened to a life that’s led by faith, rather than sight.

Imagine having a life full of anxiety, where every moment seemed as if it were a batte to the death; each punctuated by an exclaimation point – or a question mark.

No certainty. No periods. No peace.

How do you start changing those exclaimation points/question marks into periods of peace? Well, it helps to have a deep sense of knowing one thing:

God is in control.

Also: God loves you – more than anybody, anything or any life ever could.

To somebody who doesn’t yet know God, these sorts of notions sound far-fetched and even fairytale-ish. However, I think it’s important to point out the vast number of things human beings take on faith, every single day.ho

Even our very existence and consciousness (conscious-less) is somewhat of a miracle in probability, when you factor in the fact that every male ejaculation (different than orgasm…but that’s a blog for another time) contains between 40-500 million sperm cells.

The odds of winning the powerball are 1 in 292,000,000 – to put things in perspective.

I can think of at least two reasons why I shouldn’t be typing this blog, which happened long before I was ever conceived; the day(s) my grandfather was shot down while while missions in the Dutch Royal Air Force.

Yes, he was shot down.

Twice.

Most pilots didn’t survive it a single time; not to mention, the days he was left stranded with wild seas, and fended off sharks — then watched his close friends/crewmates lose their lives to both.

It’s a miracle that all of us are here.

To that point, is it that far of a stretch to put faith in the idea that something more intelligent, powerful and capable than humans is the reason that we’re here?

…to that point, wouldn’t it be remarkable if that…’thing’…..that Divine, Cosmic, Supernatural ‘thing’ – loved you?

Not the sort of love that other people showed you; the sort of brokeness many peddle in order to get something from you they want.

Not that kind of love.

Love.

If that entity actually existed and had a plan for your life, would you want to trust That plan over your plan?

I would. I do. I will.
